On Saturday 3rd September, 2022 we’ll once again be taking over the park to raise awareness of the importance of vultures for our planet. Visitors can learn all about their habitat, feeding habits and issues they face in the wild. The park is home to six species of vulture from Europe, Africa and America. You can find out more about our vultures here and with 23 species of vulture on the planet, there’s a lot to talk about.

5 Facts about vultures:

  1. Vultures are large birds that do not hunt for food. Instead, they feed on the remains of dead animals, called carrion.
  2. Vultures have relatively bare heads and often bare necks, which prevents feathers from matting with blood when vultures are feeding on carcasses.
  3. A vulture soaring through the sky can spot a 3-foot animal carcass from 4 miles away.
  4. When under attack or threatened, the Turkey Vulture will defend itself by vomiting very potent stomach acids. This deterrent also helps “lighten the load” so they can escape easily into flight.
  5. The vulture is more closely related to the stork than to any other bird of prey.

A bit of info about International Vulture Awareness Day
On this day zoos all over the world celebrate the mighty vulture. Raising awareness of this species of bird, spreading knowledge and discussing the problems vultures face in the wild today. We discuss ways everyone can help – through talking about the issues, by supporting and donating. We’ll show you how vultures feed, fly and educate as to how they survive in the wild. We will also be raising funds to help international organisation Vulpro continue to work to save Africa’s endangered vultures.

This November Jake and Laura from our team here at Gauntlet Birds of Prey will be travelling to Vulpro in South Africa to work as volunteers, read about the run up to their journey here.

This event is open to everyone – click here to purchase our ‘Daily Entry Tickets’.

  • Doors open at 11am (last entry to the park 3pm)
